NPSA Explained

NPSA (previously CPNI) is the government authority for protective security advice to the UK national infrastructure. Their role is to protect national security by helping to reduce the vulnerability of the national infrastructure to terrorism and other threats. The national infrastructure consists of key assets – physical and electronic – that are vital to the continued delivery and integrity of essential services such as energy, communications, transport and water. The national infrastructure faces threats from international and domestic terrorism, espionage and other hostile foreign activity. To counter these, NPSA provides authoritative expert advice to organisations across the national infrastructure, covering physical and personnel/people protective security. All the advice is informed by access to intelligence and information about the threats.

As one of the first Perimeter Security Fencing manufacturers to work with NPSA in the early 2000’s Lochrin Bain working in conjunction with the Home Office have developed a range of systems suitable for Critical National Infrastructure with hundreds of sites secured in recent years.

LPS 1175 Explained

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) is a former UK Government laboratory, privatized in 1997, and owned by the BRE Trust who provide research, advice, training, testing, certification and standards for both public and private sector organisations in the UK and abroad.

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) by BRE works closely with industry and insurers setting the standards needed to ensure that fire and security products and services perform effectively. ‘LPS’ stands for ‘Loss Prevention Standard’ with the 1175 standard focussing on the physical security of ‘intruder resistant building components’, which includes Security Fencing and Gate systems, security enclosures, free-standing barriers, and any products that fall within those categories, such as doors, shutters or even key safes. Once tested and certified, products are entered into the LPCB Red Book which is a key reference for specifiers, regulators, designers and end users of fire and security products and services. Every product and service listed in the Red Book has been robustly checked by independent experts to ensure that it delivers and will continue to deliver the performance expected.

The LPS 1175 Issue : 8 standard is based on a variety of tool kits and attack times to categorise the security rating a product is certified to. These ratings are split into eight different security ratings ranging from B1 which was previously called SR1 on Issue :7 through to H20 which was previously SR8.

This useful infographic from BRE shows how the security ratings are determined based on the tool sets, number of attackers and attack times.

Secured By Design Explained

Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit.

SBD’s product based accreditation scheme – the Police Preferred Specification – provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime.

There are currently many hundreds of companies producing thousands of attack resistant crime prevention products, across 30 different crime categories, which have achieved Police Preferred Specification.

SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.
